hi everyone,

well i had my review with my Consultant this morning ... was worried i wouldn't get there as we got up to snow and my appointment was early. fortunately once we got onto the main roads it was slushy.

i've been on Methotrexate since June 17th going from 10mg to 20mg ... although my CRP has come down it's still too high.

i told her i am convinced the Methotrexate has interefered with my sleep, i know it's not listed as a side affect but i know my own body and my sleep pattern has definately changed ... and she agreed we are all different and couldn't rule it out.

but i have to try another drug before i can be considered for Anti TFN's.

so after much discussion ... have to say she did give me a choice i am going onto Hydroxychloroquine. if this fails then i will go onto the Anti TFN's.

we spoke about Leflunomide but i do suffer from high blood pressure but it's now controlled very well and i know it can raise it, also spoke about Methotrexate injections ... but i said i would prefer to add another drug.

so will have to give it 3 months and see.

i am now on an anti-depressant to help with my sleep and it does, but still not a good sleep.

also had a Depo, the last one didn't work so fingers crossed although i am not in terrible pain ( i get more pain from the Osteo in my knee's ) she said as the RA is active a Depo would be a good idea.

i am anxious about starting it as i was about the Methotrexate where i managed to lose over half a stone in a week with worry ... so trying to stay more calm as i am a few months down the line now and learnt so much more, mostly from this Forum.

have to say i do get fantastic support from my RA Unit.

will post how i am getting on as and when,

Suzanne x

Hi Suzanne
Glad you managed to make it through the snow for your appointment! Hopefully the depo will settle things down for you and the hydroxy will work for you... Ive just come back from seeing my rheummy nurse as I phoned the helpline yesterday as Ive been in so much pain, She spoke to my consultant and following another das score today have been given leaflets for 4 different anti tnfs! Im to read over them and go back to see consultant end of Dec..really dont know which one will be best 3 are injections and one is an infusion. She also gave me another depo (thats my 3rd since sept 7th) and some wrist supports so to be fair she was really helpful (glad I phoned now).
Talking about anti depressants I have made an appointment with my gp for the new year as I have been feeling very down lately and not a bit like I used to be, I struggle to work come home and dont want to go out again, my husband and daughters have said theyve noticed a big change in me (I used to be so bubbly). So will be interested to see how you feel taking them, and really hope you get a good nights sleep try not to worry too much about starting a new drug fingers crossed it will help and we'll both have a better new year!
Take care luv Ceri xx

Hi Suzanne

Please, please don't worry about taking plaquenil. It doesn't have all the nasty side effects which can show up with all the other stuff. You will have to have an eye test before you start on it, and get your eyes checked every year as it can (although my optician has never come across this happening in 18 years) cause the start of catarract.

With regard to mtx injectable: Because it is absorbed directly into the blood stream, it is often the case that a smaller doseage is sufficient. A lot of the efficacy is lost with tablets because the body expels much of it through the kidneys. It also does away with any sickness as it doesn't damage the tum and can help with the tired feling.

I've been on anti-depressants for several years and once they are in your system, they will help with the sleeping problems.

Take care, and try not to worry too much - it'll only bring on a flare!!

Love Jeanxxxxxx

Hi Suzanne,

Glad you got there ok, It's good to chat to your consultant, I always write down things over a few weeks so I do not forget anything. Don't worry about this drug Hydroxchloroquine or it's other name plaquenil. I have been on this for 3 years and it has never given the least bit of trouble. I get my eyes tested once each year and my optition gives them a through check because he knows I am on this. In fact my consultant may stop me using this drug when I go to see her, she told me that the last time I saw her.

I hope your snow doesn't get as bad as ours, it has not let up all day. Where my husband has cleared it we have about four feet high piles of it around the garden. We have not had it this bad for years, It's now as deep as ever. When the roads get a bit better we shall take the girls sledging, this is always a favourite.

Hope you get on fine with your new drug, I'm sure you will. Lorna xx Smile

Hello Suzanne,

Pleased that you had a good appointment with your Specialist. You do not appear
to get 'rushed' so lucky you. I hope the depo helps your pain within a few days
but very advisable to rest now for next 48 hrs to give it a chance.

As I understand the mtx inject are much better for the tummy, sickness etc. as they
go direct into the systemn unlike mtx by tablet form. However you made your choice
and I am sure you will be fine adding the hydro into the mix. I saw an eye specialist
in readiness to start with it along side mtx and sulph. but my liver went 'odd' so
didn't get to start it.

Good luck and don't worry

Ceri i will be interested to hear how you get on with the Anti TFN's ... did you read Rose's post about deciding on which in i think it's in the Drugs section. if i start on them the Rheumy Nurse says she will see me monthly to start with. and i was really reluctant to start on Anti-Depressant's Ceri but my GP has assured me they are not addictive and by reading this Forum i know a lot take them and i think they go hand on hand with people who suffer chronic pain by talking about it with friends.

have to say this Depo has definately helped already after the last one failing, this is my 3rd one since June.

yes June Lorna and Rose was told about the eye tests, i was given a chart with little squares on to check my eyes montly and check i can see the squares without any blank spaces. she didn't ask me yet to to go my Optician will ask about that at my next official appointment in March ... but if the Hdroxy causes me any problems i have to phone and they will consider that as failed and then onto the Anti TFN's.

thanks for all the support it is so appreciated.
